Saturday's Group C match between Australia and France became the first FIFA World Cup match ever where VAR was used, with the referee eventually awarding France a penalty after consulting the system. France went on to win 2-1.

"As of today, FIFA is perfectly satisfied with the level of refereeing and with the successful implementation of the VAR system, which on the whole was well received by the football community," read a FIFA statement.

"Some decisions obviously still give rise to discussions. We hope you understand that FIFA does not have the possibility to comment on each and every disputable episode."

Earlier, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that VAR had proven "beneficial" for football and it was introduced in order to help referees during the World Cup.
