FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Friday that Argentina forward Lionel Messi had been "amazing" at this summer's World Cup and that Argentina would come out strong at the the next global tournament.
Messi, who is widely regarded as one of the best footballers of his generation, has won almost every possible title with his club Barcelona but scored only one goal at the World Cup in Russia and failed to captain Argentina to another triumph after the two-time champions lost 4-3 to France in the round of 16.
"Of Course, Argentina expected a lot from the Argentinian national team, the whole world was looking forward to seeing Argentina, and in the end they lost during a very intense, interesting match against France, and France is now in the final... I am convinced that at the next World Cup we will see a very strong Argentinian team again. Messi was amazing, as always. He scored an amazing goal," Infantino said at a press conference.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 with the final showdown between France and Croatia set to take place at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.
