FIFA will investigate whether the chants by England fans during their team's semi-final game against Croatia were discriminatory, UK media reported on Thursday.
England lost 2-1 to Croatia on Thursday morning (AEST) failing to advance to their first World Cup final since 1966.
"We can confirm that a report has been filed in relation to chants of a possible discriminatory nature by English fans. Proceedings have been opened against the Football Association [FA]," FIFA told the BBC.
On Wednesday the FA was fined 70,000 Swiss francs (almost $70,000) after Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Raheem Sterling wore branded ankle support socks over official socks, thus breaching FIFA rules.
England will face Belgium in the third-place match in St. Petersburg on Sunday (AEST).
