The  much hyped move to the Bandung Tigers has already turned sour for the ex-Premier League players who inadvertently fell foul of immigration authorities.

The duo made their debut in a season-opening goalless draw against Arema despite their club failing to officially register them in time to play legally.

Club manager Umuh Muchtar believes the star imports are being unfairly persecuted by authorities.

“That they are here is a joy for us, they want to raise up Indonesia’s name in the world," Muchtar said.

But an immigration spokesperson said: “They are professionals so they must hold a permit to perform activities in Indonesia."

Whether Cole and Essien are deported or sent to jail is up for debate, but it doesn’t make for a great start.
