The round of 16 game between Russia and Spain on Sunday was the hardest in the history of Russian football, Russian Sports Minister Pavel Kolobkov said Sunday.
The 90 minutes ended in a 1-1 draw, as did extra time. Russia then snatched victory 4-3 in the penalty shootout.
“The boys are all extremely tired, the locker room is quiet. It was a difficult game. I think there wasn’t a harder game in the history of the Russian football. And I am also sure that the next game will not be any easier,” Kolobkov told reporters after the game.
Reaching the last eight in itself is a huge success, the minister said, stressing that the team received a confidence boots ahead of the next game.
In the quarter-final Russia will face Croatia or Denmark.
