Peru head coach Ricardo Gareca said Thursday that his side did everything they could to beat France but their opponents deserved their victory.
"Of course we hoped for a different result, but I am happy with the way the team gave it all at the pitch and the effort we put it. We need to finish this tournament on a high note for the sake of our supporters. I have nothing to blame my team for. We tried to do our best to win these matches, but France deserved this victory. We worked well in this game, we had our moments, we were good on the pitch. This will be a lesson for us," Gareca said.
He added that it was important for the team to play at the tournamen in order to learn from other teams.
"I see it as a beginning of a new path, we have good support, including financially from our sponsor, we have young players who will evolve and progress. I think the fact that they have played here will become a good foundation for the future," Gareca said.
Peru's defeat means they have no hope of reaching the next round and will exit the World Cup, while Didier Deschamps's team will advance into the round of 16 of the tournament in Russia.
France lead Group C with six points and will face Denmark at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Tuesday.
