YEKATERINBURG, June 21 (Sputnik) - France Head Coach Didier Deschamps said Thursday that Russia's early success does not mean they will automatically advance deeper into the competition.
Russia won both of their group-stage matches against Egypt and Saudi Arabia and qualified for the knockout stage for the first time.
"I would like to congratulate Russia with two excellent victories, they are off with a good start. It's very good for the country as organizers, because all the fans can be proud of their team. But such start does not mean they will advance far [in the tournament]. That applies to us as well," Deschamps said.
Russia will face Uruguay in their final group stage match of the tournament in Samara on June 25. They qualified for the knockout stage for the first time ever and might face either Portugal or Spain in the next round.
