Sweden defender and captain Andreas Granqvist said on Monday that he hoped that there would be no penalty shootout in his side's upcoming World Cup match against Switzerland.
The two teams will go head-to-head in the round of 16 game at the St. Petersburg Stadium on Wednesday morning (AEST). On Monday morning, Russia and Croatia set up a meeting in the quarter-finals after both teams won their respective games on penalties.
"Switzerland are the favorites to win tomorrow. I hope that it won't come to the penalty shootout, I hope that we'll beat Switzerland before that. I'm confident [that I'll cope well] if I have to take a penalty," Granqvist said.
The 33-year-old, who has converted two spot-kicks for Sweden during the group stage, added that his side would show their "fighting spirit" in the last 16 game.
"We know that there are great players in the Swiss team. They have proved that they hardly ever lose, so we'll continue working, and we'll show our fighting spirit," he added.
