France forward Antoine Griezmann said he had a lot of respect for Uruguay and therefore did not celebrate his goal against the team on Friday.
France defeated Uruguay 2-0 in their World Cup quarter-final in Nizhny Novgorod, with Griezmann scoring the second goal.
“I did not celebrate it [the goal], because when I started my career, Uruguay taught me a lot in football. I respect Uruguay immensely,” Griezmann told reporters at the post-match press conference.
Griezmann is club teammates with Uruguay players Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez, who all play for Atletico Madrid.
In the semi-final on 10 July, France will face Brazil or Belgium.
