“Argentina, as I said, has world-class players. They have been in the finals and won titles, and I believe firmly they will go far. That’s why this is a great success, to get a point against them is very important for us. They try to create positions where they can be one on one and get the space and the ball. We had good opportunities, they had good opportunities, the game could go either way,” Hallgrimsson said.

He added that his team “played their defense brilliantly” and that the players “should get all the credit for both organization and hard work.”

Manchester City and Argentina forward Sergio Aguero scored the opening goal in the 19th minute, but Alfred Finnbogason leveled the score four minutes later.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi failed to convert a penalty in the 64th minute and became the first player to miss a penalty kick at the World Cup in Russia.

Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Haldorsson was named Man of the Match and made seven saves, including from Messi's penalty.

Iceland is set to face Nigeria on 22 June and Croatia on 26 June in Group D matches.
