Aussie rising star Chris Herd talks Villa, Holman and EPL.
Has Manchester City winning the title been a good thing for the EPL? Your thoughts...
I think it’s good for football. It’s a new team winning the league and its made the competition that bit harder. I think this year will be even tougher again. Every year teams are getting better and players are getting faster and stronger. Hopefully this season we can improve and there's no reason we can't get up there as well.
Brett Holman's arrived at Villa, any initial thoughts on how he's settled in and the impact he could make for the team?
I think Brett is going to have a really good impact. He's a really good footballer and he's played in such a good league for so long I think he'll bring great experience to the team as well.
What did you know about him before he arrived at Villa Park?
I knew him because he was Australian, but I didn't know him personally. You know who the Australian players are in the senior team. I'd seen him play a few times and I knew about his ability. I knew he'd settle in well here and hopefully he can carry on playing the way he has been.
What advice would you give Brett about playing in the EPL?
I don't think advice should really be coming from me, I've only played one season! I think he'll be OK, he's got great experience so he won't need any words from me.
Congratulations on the contract extension last season. What's been the key to your own success in establishing yourself at Villa Park?
With the new manager I think everybody is just trying to impress him and try get into the starting XI. I'm just going to take every day as it comes in pre-season, do my best and hopefully get in to the starting team.
You've been at the club a while now, what's special about the club?
It’s been a great club for me since I came over when I was 15. Everybody has looked after me really well and the fans have been great with me, especially last season. I'm just really thankful to be at such a great club.
What are your ambitions personally for this coming season?
Obviously with the new manager everyone is looking to impress him. I'm the same as everyone else, we all start with a clean slate. I'm just looking to get into the team and play as many games as I can.
What's giving you confidence that this could be a better season than last?
I think the team spirit has always been there. The new gaffer seems to be really good and the boys are enjoying training. I think we're going to have a good season.
In your opinion, what would be a successful season for you and the team?
We've just got to win as many games as possible. We've got to do as well as we can and see where we can go from there. Personally, just to get into the team and play as many games as possible. If I can play more games than I played last season then I will be happy.
New manager, new season, what are the expectations like from the Villa fans and media over there?
The fans are all really excited, there's a good feeling around the club at the moment. Hopefully we can carry that into the season.
Brett says the new manager wants to play a passing game, is something you'd like to see more of?
Everybody wants to play good football but I think we just need to win games. If you're winning things go a lot better and everyone has confidence. I think as long as we're doing that we'll be OK.
I know it's early days, but what have been your impressions of Paul Lambert's methods?
Definitely impressed. They've been very professional and the whole squad has been working hard but enjoying it. Hopefully the boys can stick together and have a great season.
Looking at the Villa squad overall, who are the players you reckon are set to have big seasons for the club and why?
I think all the boys are looking good and everyone is excited. Everybody is working hard to impress the new gaffer so I think we'll have a good season.
