Lokomotiv Moscow and Croatia defender Vedran Corluka says he was cheering on Russia during their World Cup Round of 16 win over Spain.
Croatia will face Russia in the quarter-final match at Sochi's Fisht Stadium on 8 July (AEST).
Corluka's teammates got the better of Denmark, also in a penalty shootout, to set up a meeting with the host nation.
"Of course, I expected that this game could happen. I said after the match with Iceland that I was waiting for the game with Russia," said Corluka.
"They played against Spain brilliantly. I watched the match and supported our mates, Russia. I know all the Russia players, and don't know anyone among the Spaniards."
The 32-year-old added that Russia were strong in defence against Spain.
"The coach chose the right tactics for the game," he said.
