MOSCOW, June 24 (Sputnik) - Alexander Ovechkin, the captain of the National Hockey League (NHL) side, the Washington Capitals, is not planing to attend matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, an NHL spokesman Sergey Kostarov told Sputnik Sunday.
"Alexander Ovechkin isn't currently planning to attend the World Cup matches," Kostarov said.
Earlier it was reported that Ovechkin, who became the first Russian captain to win the NHL's top prize, the Stanley Cup, arrived in Moscow on Sunday.
Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup will last until July 15, with a total of 64 matches set to be held at 12 stadiums across 11 cities.
