The number of online searches for cheap flights from the United Kingdom to Russia has risen 2.5 times after the English national football team booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the World Cup, US media reported.
England beat Colombia 4-3 on penalties on Wednesday morning (AEST) to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2006.
According to the survey published by the news website Business Insider, travel search engine CheapFlightsFinder.com reported a spike of 148% in searches of cheap flights from the United Kingdom to Russia, while France's searches spiked by 135%.
A spike of 112% was reported in Sweden after the Scandinavian side moved into the last eight for the first time in 24 years. Croatia's searches peaked at an increase of 93%, and Belgium's at 78%.
In the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup, Russia will face Croatia, Brazil will take on Belgium, England will play Sweden and Uruguay will meet France.
Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15.
