Japan midfielder and captain Makoto Hasebe announced his retirement from international football on Tuesday, following his team round of 16 exit from the World Cup.
Japan threw away a two-goal lead to go crashing out of the tournament after losing to Belgium 3-2 on Monday.
"First of all, I thank you for supporting Japan at the World Cup in Russia. Your energy pushed our team forward. As for me, finishing this tournament I would like to finish my career with the national team as well," Hasebe wrote on his Instagram account.
The 34-year-old Eintracht Frankfurt player has scored two goals in 114 matches for Japan since making his international debut in 2006.
