Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has announced his retirement from the national team followed their defeat to France on Saturday.
Argentina lost the round of 16 game in Kazan 4-3 and were eliminated from the tournament. France will play Uruguay or Portugal in the quarter-final.
“It is time to say goodbye,” the 34-year-old told the TyC Sports channel shortly after the game.
Mascherano made his international debut in 2001 and with 147 appearances, became the most capped player in Argentina’s history.
