After John van 't Schip resigned as manager of Melbourne City due to family reasons, all eyes were on interim coach Mike Valkanis, to see how his team would fare during his first match in charge.

A stunning volley from defender Ivan Franjic rewarded Melbourne City for their early dominance, but was almost undone when Nichols failed to convert a one on one chance in the 27th minute.

To add insult to injury, Borda was sent off for Western Sydney in the 30th minute, creating problems for the Wanderers, with more than half of the game remaining.

The Wanderers threatened in the second half, but failed to equalise, handing Melbourne City their first win of 2017.

But what did the fans think about the key moments of the match?

On Janjetovic’s inclusion into the first team…

The Wanderers new recruit was given an immediate opportunity by Popovic to prove his worth, but his selection proved controversial.

On Milo...

One fan’s attention had already drifted early in the match, asking a very important question…

On THAT Ivan Franjic goal…

Franjic’s sweet volley got the fans excited, but could Janjetovic have done better between the sticks?

On Borda’s red card…

Borda’s elbow on Fornaroli was given a straight red, which quite possibly was the difference in the end. Fans were divided on whether the decision was warranted.

Halftime Thoughts…

On Jonathan Aspro’s performance…

The young central defender impressed again tonight, surely cementing a spot in the first team line-up for the remainder of the season.

On the inevitable presence of AAMI Park seagulls…

They were the highlight of this year’s FFA Cup Final, and are still interesting enough to receive some mentions on Twitter!

On Janjetovic’s 90th minute save…

Is this the one save that justified Popovic’s inclusion of his newly signed goalkeeper into the first team?

Full Time Thoughts…

Western Sydney threatened to equalise, even with ten men, but Melbourne City held on in the second half. It wasn’t the most entertaining of matches, but there were still some fascinating, debatable and interesting moments to take notice of.
