"The Tverskoy District Court of Moscow ruled on June 15, 2018, as a precautionary measure, to remand [the Peruvian citizen], accused of committing a crime under ... Article 158 of the Russian Criminal Code [theft], in custody for two months until August 13, 2018," the press service said.

The Public Oversight Commission said the 40-year-old woman had been detained in Moscow and placed in a temporary detention facility. She faces a fine or up to five years in prison.

A spokesperson for the Peruvian Embassy in Moscow told Sputnik it was closely monitoring the situation.

From June 14 to July 15, Russia is hosting the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. Matches are set to be played in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Volgograd, and Samara.
