MOSCOW, July 8 (Sputnik) - Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin thanked the Russian national football team for the "hope for future" that they gave their fans.
Hosts Russia were eliminated from the tournament, as Croatia beat them on penalties in Sochi on Saturday to advance to the World Cup semi-finals, where they will face England. The match ended 2-2 after extra time.
"Russia are winners despite losing [the Croatia match]. Thank you to our team! Guys, you gave us an incomparable, fantastic feast and the hope for future," Sobyanin posted on his Twitter account.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the final set to be held at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
