The deputy governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Dmitri Svatkovskiy said on Wednesday that the city "got lucky" with the teams who played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium – France, Croatia and England - as all of them advanced to the final stages of the World Cup in Russia.
“I think that we got lucky with the teams who played in Nizhny Novgorod – three out of four teams who played at our stadium are now playing in the final – France, Croatia and England… the Nizhny Novgorod residents got to see champions' play, because all the teams are still playing in the tournament and this is a unique situation,” Svatkovskiy told journalists.
He added that the matches that took place at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium had a total of 19 goals – the highest number of goals collectively scored in matches of this summer's tournament played at a single stadium.
Svatkovskiy also said that the arena had become the most visited stadium of the World Cup with a total of over 256,000 people attending the matches.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on 14 June and will continue until Sunday, with the final to be played at the Luzhniki Stadium. Nizhny Novgorod hosted four games at the Group Stage of the tournament, one Round of 16 game and a quarter-final match.
