Russia reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991 before beating 2010 champions Spain on penalties in the Round of 16.

They lost to finalists Croatia on penalties in the quarter-finals.

According to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Centre., a total of 47% of the respondents said that they were proud of Russia's achievements at the tournament, while 35% felt respect for the team.

Only 1% said they were ashamed of the players' performance.

The pollster added that every tenth respondent was indifferent to the results the national team produced at the World Cup.

The phone survey was conducted among 1,600 respondents aged 18 or older.

This year's tournament will come to an end at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Monday morning AEST, when France will face Croatia in the World Cup final.
