"According to the preliminary estimates, hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup helped us attract over 2 million people including fans, guests of the tournament and official delegations, to the rail transport," the Russian Railways said.

During the tournament, the company organized a total of 734 free additional train trips for fans and accredited journalist between the host cities, with the number of seats exceeding 440,000.

The Russian Railways added that the updated railway infrastructure would constitute a significant part of the 2018 World Cup legacy, providing a higher level of security and accessibility.

Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and came to a close on Sunday with 64 games played in 11 cities across the country.
