A 40-year-old Peruvian woman suspected of stealing a wallet has become the first foreign football fan to be detained in Moscow, Moscow's Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) Executive Secretary Ivan Melnikov told Sputnik on Friday.
"As we have been informed, a 40-year-old Peru citizen, who came to Russia with her friends to attend a match involving her [country's football] team, was detained on suspicion of having stolen a wallet. She is in a temporary detention facility. She is the first fan to be detained for a violation of the law," Melnikov said.
He added that PMC members had already visited the Peruvian. They will now discuss her situation with employees of the Peruvian Embassy in Russia.
"She has not had any complaints... The problem of establishing communication with representatives from her country is now being solved," Melnikov said.
Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup began on Thursday and will continue until July 15, with the matches taking place in 11 cities.
