DENMARK: Another gifted player from the Ajax production line, Christian Eriksen will be the focal point as Denmark bid to escape the toughest group in Euro 2012.
Eriksen has had little time to relax since the football world became aware of his potential after he made a surprising debut for the national team in March 2010.
He was a shock inclusion in Morten Olsens’s 2010 World Cup squad and made two substitute appearances in South Africa. Now 20, he was even the youngest player in South Africa.
He also played for the Danish U21s in the European Championship in 2011.
He can run deep from his position in midfield and he can shoot well off both sides from distance, and is generally a really dangerous player and is considered to be one of the biggest talents Danish football have produced in years. People are already talking about him as being the “new Michael Laudrup”.
“He’s a player I really like with all my heart”, Johan Cruyff once said about him.
After starting to play the game aged just three, he joined OB Odense in 2005. There he played for their different youth teams and scored the winner in the boys championship final in 2006.
Major European football clubs including Chelsea and Barcelona started to take notice. He had trials with Barcelona, Chelsea, and Milan, but finally decided to move to Ajax, stating: "My first step should not be too big. I knew that playing in the Netherlands would be very good for my development. Then Ajax arrived and that was a fantastic option".
He joined Ajax and their famous youth academy in October 2008 from OB Odense before even having played a first team match. He worked his way through the youth teams and made his first team debut for the Dutch team in the Eresdivisie on 17 January 2010.
Since then he has become a permanent fixture in Ajax’s first team and also the national team.
In 2011 he picked up his first Championship medal, winning the Dutch league with Ajax and he has just repeated the feat winning the 2012 Championship medal.
At the end of his first full season for Ajax, Eriksen was voted the Eresdivisie’s young player of the year in 2011.
In the 2011-12 season Eriksen made 33 appearances for Ajax (the most for any of Ajax’s outfield players), all in the starting line-up and scored seven goals and he also had 17 assists.
Eriksen was not an important player for Denmark in South Africa but at Euro 2012 he will be the most important player for Denmark where he is expected to be the main player to create chances for his team mates and if luck follows him even scoring a goal or two himself.
Olsen will need Eriksen to be at his most influential if the Danes are to revive memories of 1992 and progress from, on paper, the toughest group in the tournament.
