"Let this important sport manifestation [the World Cup] become an occasion for meeting, dialogue and brotherhood between different cultures and religions, promoting solidarity and peace between nations," Pope Francis said after a traditional general audience held in Vatican.

Pope Francis, who is a keen football fan, said he wanted to send his "cordial greetings" to the World Cup participants and organizers, and everyone who will follow the tournament.

Russia's first-ever World Cup will last till July 15, with matches set to be held at 12 arenas in 11 cities.
