Russian President Vladimir Putin called Spanish King Felipe VI after the teams' World Cup round of 16 match, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday.
The match, which was held at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, ended in Russia's victory on penalties. The two teams drew 1-1 after extra time, but Russia beat Spain 4-3 on penalties and made it through to the last eight.
"The president praised the skillfulness and the high class of the Spanish team, but he still emphasized that the tactics chosen by Russia's coaching staff proved better this time," Peskov said.
He added that Putin invited Felipe VI to "visit Russia whenever convenient."
