Love for football unites the world into one team regardless of language or ideology, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday at the opening of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow.
"Regardless of where we live, what traditions we follow, we are all united by the love for football in one team: united by our love for this spectacular, brilliant, uncompromising game. That's why all the members of this team understand and feel each other well. In this unity, which is not dominated either by differences in languages, or in ideologies, or in faith, lies the great power of football, of sport in general," Putin said.
"We have been preparing to host this grand event responsibly and have done our best so that the fans, athletes and experts could immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the magnificent football festival and, of course, enjoy their stay in Russia - open, hospitable, and friendly," the Russian president stressed.
