The 39-year-old made his international debut back in 1997 and scored 19 goals in 146 matches for Mexico. In 2018, he became only the third footballer to play for his national team in five consecutive editions of the FIFA World Cup.

"For now I think I'll enjoy some free time. These have been 22 years of uninterrupted career and my future will surely be working in football," Marquez said.

Mexico, who stunned defending champions Germany 1-0 in their opening game, but lost 2-0 to Brazil in the round of 16 on Tuesday morning.

Forward Oribe Peralta also quit the Mexico team in wake of the defeat.

"I want to thank Mexico for letting me be a part of it during these years. I will always reminisce with great affection each one of the matches played. We had sorrows, but mostly joys which will remain forever in my heart," Peralta wrote on Twitter.

Peralta, who is 34, played 67 games for Mexico scoring 25 goal since making his international debut in 2005.
