"All the players are observing Ramadan in spite of the fatwa that allows them no to fast, but it doesn't affect their training and preparations [for the World Cup]," the ambassador told journalists.

Ihab Nasr added that Egypt's first World Cup match against Uruguay on June 15 will coincide with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr that marks the end of Ramadan and the game will be "a true feast" for the team.

The Egyptian squad arrived in the city of Grozny, the capital of the Russian Republic of Chechnya on Sunday, where they will be based during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The players and the coaches are staying at the new five-star hotel The Local, purpose-built for the tournament and reserved for the Egyptian team.
