Zenit St. Petersburg's Argentine midfielder Emiliano Rigoni said Wednesday that the St. Petersburg Stadium was the best of all the arenas hosting the 2018 World Cup and that the 100th goal of the tournament was scored there deservedly.
The 100th goal of the World Cup was scored by Argentina forward Lionel Messi as his side beat Nigeria 2-1 to qualify for the round of 16.
"Both us and the stadium have deserved it. And Leo Messi, who showed a fantastic performance at our arena, has surely deserved it as well. He decided the outcome of the game by scoring in the right moment... This was his 65th goal for the national team, if I'm not mistaken. He has deserved it," Rigoni said as quoted by Zenit's official website.
Argentina will next face Group C winners France in their round of 16 match, which will be played in Kazan on Saturday.
Rigoni also said that Argentina would come out victorious as they were "in high spirits" after reaching the knockout stage.
"I'm sure that Argentina will win... Yesterday's match was very important for our team. But I didn't doubt for a moment that Argentina would go further... Me and my Zenit teammates decided that our team [Argentina] can reach the final," Rigoni added.
