Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo said on Wednesday that if his team had lost to Morocco in their second World Cup match, their chances of moving into the knockout stage would have been ruined.
“The most important thing is to win and earn three points. We know, because if we’d lost, we could been have out. Morocco tried hard [to win]. Their approach play was good and they played well. Yes, I managed to score and that is why we won. And that was beautiful,” Ronaldo told journalists.
Portugal beat Morocco 1-0 on Wednesday, after drawing 3-3 with Spain in their opening game. Ronaldo has scored all four goals for his team so far. His last strike was his 85th international goal for Portugal and made him Europe's all-time leading international goalscorer.
The 33-year-old striker was named the man of the match in both games and is an early front-runner for the Golden Boot award for most goals scored at the World Cup.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on 14 June and will continue until 15 July, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia. Reigning European champions Portugal will next face Iran in Saransk on 25 June.
