Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov executed his mission, so the answer if he remains in his position is "obvious," the Russian Football Union's First Vice President Nikita Simonyan said on Saturday.
Hosts Russia were eliminated from the tournament, as Croatia beat them on penalties after a 2-2 draw after extra time in Sochi on Saturday. Reaching the quarter-finals is Russia's best result in the World Cups history since the break-up of the Soviet Union.
"The team struggled from the first to the last day. The guys did well, we are grateful to them. [Head coach Stanislav] Cherchesov has executed his mission, so the answer if he stays in his position is obvious," Simonyan told journalists.
He added that hardly anybody believed Russia could achieve such results at the beginning of the World Cup.
"The team almost reached the semi-finals, so we applaud to them," Simonyan said.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the final set to be held at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
