The national team managed to reach the World Cup knockout stage and go as far as the quarter-finals for the first time since the end of the Soviet era, showing their best result at a World Cup so far.

On Sunday morning (AEST), the hosts suffered a 4-3 defeat on penalties to Croatia after drawing 2-2 in extra time in the quarter-final and were eliminated from the tournament.

"The World Cup is over for us...but it was the best time, the unforgettable moments, you should cherish it," he posted on Instagram.

"I am overwhelmed with pride for those guys who went all this way shoulder to shoulder!.. Thank you, country! Thank you, fans, for your support."

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the final set to be played at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
