Former Real Madrid and Spain striker Fernando Morientes told Sputnik on Saturday that Russia worked hard and deserved to reach the quarter-finals at the 2018 World Cup.
Russia lost 4-3 on penalties to Croatia in Sochi on 7 July and were eliminated from the tournament, after the match finished 2-2 following extra time.
"For me personally Russia's result and way of playing at the World Cup wasn't a sensation. There are no sensations at the World Cup. You get what you've worked for. Russia worked hard, they prepared very well and received a good reward entering the quarter-finals," Morientes said.
The 42-year-old is fourth on the Spanish all-time top scorers' list with 27 goals in 47 appearances.
