The match, which was held at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, resulted in Russia's victory on penalties. The two teams drew 1-1 after extra time, but Russia managed to beat Spain 4-3 on penalties, with Akinfeev saving Koke's and Iago Aspas’ penalties.

"To be honest, we hoped for penalties and this is what happened," Akinfeev told Russia’s Channel One.

Russia have reached their first-ever World Cup quarter-finals since the break-up of the Soviet Union and will face the winner of Croatia and Denmark's encounter. The quarterfinal will take place at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi on 7 July.
