MOSCOW, June 1 (Sputnik) - Russia needs seasoned footballers to play at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, the team's goalkeeping coach Gintaras Stauce told Sputnik on Friday.
"We're set to play at the World Cup that's why we need first of all experienced footballers, who have played in the Champions League and other international tournaments," Stauce said.
When asked whether the other goaltenders in the squad could compete with Russia's long-time first-choice keeper Igor Akinfeev, Stauce said that there was nothing unusual in having only one goalkeeper playing for the team for many years.
"And the others, as they say, just have to wait for their chance... A third-choice player could become first-choice within two hours if something bad happens to the main one," the coach said adding that even without game practice other goalkeepers could still learn a lot by communicating and training with their teammates.
He also said that the team's successful performance did not depend on the amount of training but on the players' awareness of what is expected from them on the pitch.
"Everything must be planned strategically and tactically... Every player abroad knows what their job is and sticks to the instructions. But the job itself - the training and the planning - is the responsibility of a coach. If there's no result, it means that the coach did it wrong," Stauce said.
Russia's final World Cup squad is to be announced by June 4 as required by FIFA. The country's preliminary 23-man squad had been training in Austria for the last 11 days before returning home late on Thursday, a day after losing their warm-up friendly to Austria 1-0.
The national team are set to play Turkey in their final pre-World Cup friendly in Moscow on June 5.
Russia will host the FIFA World Cup for the first time from June 14 to July 15 at 12 arenas in 11 cities. The hosts will face Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay in Group A.
