Former France midfielder and 1998 FIFA World Cup champion Marcel Desailly said on Sunday that Russia's players should focus on winning their first match of the tournament against Saudi Arabia, and not think about their chances of getting past the group stage.
"Now it is important not to think that Russia will get past the group stage, but to think about the first match where they will play Saudi Arabia," Desailly said.
"All the players should believe they can win this opening match, and only after it they can think about reaching the next stage. They can think about getting past the group only after the second game."
The France legend took part in the opening ceremony of the FIFA Fan Fest in Moscow on Sunday.
"The quality of organization and the security level at the tournament are high. So many people have come here [to the fan zone], and even more will come - not only to Moscow, but also to other cities. It will be wonderful. Football will make you even better," Desailly told fans during the ceremony.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held between June 14 and July 15 at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities, with the host nation facing Saudi Arabia in the opening match.
