Russia, who will host this summer's FIFA World Cup, lost 1-0 to Austria in a friendly on Wednesday, while they also suffered defeats to Brazil and France in the run-up to the tournament.

"Russia failed to impress during the friendlies and this is why expectations are not great [ahead of the World Cup] and the public are worried. You know, the international tournament, new emotions... the stadiums will be full and will be supporting Russia. I think the players will improve," Tikhonov told journalists.

Russia will host its first World Cup from June 14 to July 15. The fixtures will be played at 12 stadiums across 11 cities.

Russia will face Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group A.
