MOSCOW, May 27 (Sputnik) - Former Soviet Union goalkeeper Rinat Dasaev told Sputnik on Sunday that Russia should get past the group stage at this summer's FIFA World Cup and that Germany would meet Brazil in the final.
"I think that, first of all, we need to get past the group stage. And we surely will. And then it will depend on [our] opponent... I think that Germany and Brazil will play in the final. I don't know who will win. I will support Russia and Spain. I am not counting them out," Dasaev, who played in three World Cups with the Soviet Union, said.
The 1988 World Goalkeeper of the Year award winner added that he preferred to watch Argentina star Lionel Messi play rather than Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.
"Ronaldo is more straightforward. [He is] a scorer. Messi is much more unique. He can score, pass and dribble," the former keeper said.
Dasaev made 91 appearances for the Soviet Union, making his international debut back in 1979. During his club career he played for Russian sides Volgar Astrakhan and Spartak Moscow as well as Spanish club Sevilla. He retired in 1991.
Russia will host its first-ever FIFA World Cup at 12 stadiums across 11 cities from June 14 to July 15. The host nation will face Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay in Group A.
