A group of Saudi Arabian fans were cheated out of almost AUD $340,000 when they were offered a group plane transfer from Moscow to Volgograd for their national team's final World Cup match against Egypt, a source in the Russian law enforcement agencies says.
"A Saudi Arabian fan told us that, in the evening of June 24, he gave USD $120,000 and €110,000 to an unknown person for organising a flight from Moscow to Volgograd. The person then escaped with the money," the source said.
A criminal investigation has been opened into the case.
Saudi Arabia beat Egypt 2-1 in Volgograd on Monday after both teams had been eliminated from the World Cup.
