MOSCOW, June 5 (Sputnik) - Saudi Arabian cyclist Fahd Ibrahim al-Yahya arrived in Moscow on Tuesday after cycling across four countries and covering more than 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) to support his team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
"The idea [of the journey] is to support the Saudi team at the World Cup. I set off from Riyadh for Moscow, traveling through Turkey and Georgia and the distance I've covered after crossing four countries has reached 5,145 kilometers (3,106 miles) in 75 days," the 38-year-old told Sputnik.
Describing his first impressions of Russia, the traveler said that the country was "incredibly beautiful" and that it was ready to host the World Cup.
"From the moment you come to Russia, everything reminds you about the World Cup - from advertising to the atmosphere, which makes you think about the World Cup even in restaurants and shops," al-Yahya said.
The cyclist added that he carried the Saudi Arabian national flag with him on his journey, which was given to him by one of the country’s princes.
Saudi Arabia will face hosts Russia in the opening match of the World Cup on June 14 before taking on their other two opponents in Group A, Egypt and Uruguay.
Russia's first-ever FIFA World Cup will be held from June 14 to July 15 in 11 cities across the country, Moscow, Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saransk, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi and Yekaterinburg.
