Russia forward Fedor Smolov said he assumed full responsibility for not scoring during the penalty shootout in the World Cup quarter-final match against Croatia in Sochi.
Russia lost 4-3 on penalties to Croatia in Sochi on Sunday (AEST) and were eliminated from the tournament, after the match finished 2-2 following extra time. The 28-year-old striker failed to score the opening penalty of the shootout.
“Unfortunately, it happened to me" Smolov said.
"I assume full responsibility for not scoring the penalty… I am grateful that this happened. I will be able to learn from it and become stronger."
He also thanked Russia’s fans and his coaching staff for their support during the tournament, and added that he was grateful for a “chance to be a part of this team.”
Croatia will next face England at Moscow’s Luzhinki Stadium on Thursday (AEST) in the semi-finals.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the final set to be played at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
