The Three Lions had reached their first World Cup semi-finals since 1990 before losing 2-1 to Croatia on Wednesday following Mario Mandzukic's extra-time goal.

"Emotionally it has been a couple of difficult days," Southgate said.

"But I have to say the players are incredible and it is a pleasure to work with them.

"We feel we owe it as much to ourselves as our public to finish well, we want to finish the tournament well.

"We've set a high standard and we want to keep those standards right to the end."

England will face Belgium, who beat them 1-0 during the group stage, in the third-place match in St. Petersburg on Saturday with the kick-off set for 17:00 local time (14:00 GMT).
