Carvajal picked up the injury in the first half of Saturday's Champions League final against Liverpool, which the Spanish side eventually won beating the Reds 3-1.

According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the 26-year-old player has suffered a hamstring injury and the recovery could take up to three weeks, meaning that the defender may miss Spain's first World Cup match against reigning European champions Portugal on June 15.

The Spanish national team announced on their official website that Carvajal was set to join the squad on Monday to undergo treatment with the team doctors.

The defender has been capped for Spain 15 times making his senior debut in 2014 but has yet to play at a major tournament. Carvajal had to miss Euro 2016 after suffering an injury during Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory against Juventus in the Champions League final.

The FIFA World Cup will be held between June 14 and July 15 at 12 stadiums across 11 Russian cities. The 2010 World Cup winners, Spain, will play Portugal, Iran and Morocco in Group B.
