ST. PETERSBURG, June 6 (Sputnik) - The St. Petersburg authorities are ready to detect football hooligans as early as the city’s airport and will send any troublemakers back to where they came from, acting head of the city's security committee Andrei Romanov said on Wednesday.
According to Romanov, the city is “ready to deal with potential hooligans” and will stop any possible violence.
“The work does not begin in the fan zone, it begins at the border. We understand who is coming to us and what for. Those who are coming to cheer for their team, we will welcome them, but those who are coming to fight… we will send them back,” Romanov told journalists.
St. Petersburg is one of the 11 Russian cities that will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place from June 14 to July 15.
A total of seven World Cup games will be played at the 67,000-seater St. Petersburg Stadium, including a semi-final and the third-place match.
