On Sunday, the US broadcaster CNN reported that Salah was "considering quitting the Egyptian national team due to his unhappiness over what has happened in Chechnya," where his side is based during this summer's FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A number of Western media claimed that Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov used Salah and his team's stay in the Chechen capital Grozny for self-promotion as he made Salah an honorary citizen of the southern Russian region.

"Up until now, there has been no crisis in the Egyptian national team regarding the reception [at the dinner] by the Chechen president and making [Mohamed] Salah an honorary citizen [of the Chechen Republic]... Salah will not leave the team... The World Cup is a sporting event. There is no politics here," the source said, who is currently with the Egyptian national team at the tournament.

He added that everyone should wait until the national team goes back to Egypt in order to clarify all the raised questions.

Egypt failed to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament after losing their first two group-stage matches.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia.
