Xhaka and Shaqiri, who are of Albanian-Kosovan heritage, celebrated their goals against Serbia with an eagle gesture in a symbol of the two-headed eagle on the Albanian flag. The duo has been already fined just over $10,000 by the football's world governing body.

"Sports have nothing to do with politics. Therefore, you cannot use during games any gestures that have political meaning. Some disciplinary measures should be taken against them in Switzerland, to make them more disciplined and to insure they are warned again not to use these gestures in the future," Kilchenmann said.

According to him, it is highly unlikely that Xhaka and Shaqiri would be expelled from the Swiss national team over this incident as "their utility is more important than the principle."

Kilchenmann underlined that the Swiss people were very "critical of that type of behavior that contradicts the principles of fair-play," adding that it was viewed by the population and the local media as an act of disloyalty to the country.

"This gesture of the two-headed eagle was viewed by a lot of Swiss people like an act of disloyalty to the country. If you wear a Swiss shirt, you play with your heart and your soul for the national team of Switzerland. There was a strong reaction in the Swiss media against those two players as well," he stated.

Switzerland are second in Group E with four points and are set to face Costa Rica in their last group game on Wednesday. A win or a draw will put them through to the round of 16.
