The match took place at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium and was attended by more than 43,000 fans.

Switzerland's Blerim Dzemaili opened the scoring late in the first half with a fine volley which sent the ball past goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Kendall Waston equalized for Costa Rica in the 56th minute heading the ball into the net after a corner from Joel Campbell.

Josep Drmic thought he had won the game for Switzerland two minutes from time after curling a first time effort into the net.

However, Costa Rica ensured they would not bow out of the tournament without a point and in stoppage time, Bryan Ruiz’s penalty came back off the crossbar and hit goalkeeper Yann Sommer and rolled into the goal.

Switzerland, who are unbeaten in the group stage, will now face Sweden for a place in the quarter-finals on Tuesday in St. Petersburg.
