Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers, who will officiate the round of 16 match between Russia and Spain, is one of the best European referees, head of the Russian Football Union’s (RFU) Referees Committee Nikolai Levnikov said.
Hosts Russia will face Spain at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Monday (12am AEST).
"Kuipers is one of the best referees in Europe and is one of the few who officiated the Champions league and Europa league finals," Levnikov said.
Kuipers will officiate his third match at the World Cup.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across the country.
