Turkey head coach Mircea Lucescu said on Tuesday he was “a Russian fan” and he hoped Stanislav Cherchesov’s side could reach the World Cup semi-finals.
Lucescu's side played out a 1-1 draw with Russia in Moscow earlier on Tuesday. Aleksandr Samedov opened the scoring for Russia in the first half only for Yunus Malli to equalize on the hour for the visitors.
“I can say that I am a fan of the Russian national team. I hope they will reach semi-finals. They have some good players and they deserve it,” Lucescu told journalists after the game.
This was Russia’s last warm-up match before they kick-off the tournament against Saudi Arabia in the opening game of the World Cup on June 14.
Turkey failed to qualify for the tournament finishing fourth in their group during the World Cup qualifiers.
